One of our favorite watches this year and a total sleeper at Watches & Wonders 2025 is the new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8-Day ref. 5328G-001, not only does this watch expand the Calatrava collection but adds yet another everyday complication with pure elegance. This new Calatrava features an instantaneous day display in an aperture and date display indicated by a hand positioned at 6 o'clock, complemented by an eight-day power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock.
Cased in 18K white gold with perfect proportions at 41 mm in diameter and 10.52 mm in thickness, the watch is powered by a brand-new movement. The case features Patek Philippe's signature guilloched hobnail pattern encircling the entire caseband.
Cloaked in a stunning textured blue dial, this grainy blue dial with a black-gradient rim is adorned with applied white gold numerals and hour/minute hands enhanced with white luminescent coating.
A small running seconds hand is positioned at 6 o'clock within the day and date subdial which we think makes the design a little busy and somewhat confusing if you are taking a really quick glance at the date indication—regardless that the seconds hand is shorter than the date indication hand.
The Calatrava 8-Day ref. 5328G-001 is delivered with two interchangeable straps: a blue calfskin with fabric pattern and cream-colored stitching and a grained taupe calfskin—not pictured here. Both straps utilize a newly patented triple-blade fold-over clasp that enhances both safety and wearing comfort while allowing for quick, tool-free strap changes.
The Movement
Turning the watch over reveals the new in-house 8-day manual movement calibre 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J composed of 256 parts and which beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph—4 Hz. This new movement beautifully balances classic design with cutting-edge innovations and includes key technical advancements including the Pulsomax escapement with Silinvar escape-wheel and lever, technologies initially developed through the Patek Philippe Advanced Research program.
The movement's dual series-coupled barrels ensure precise operation for a full eight days—192 hours—, with a ninth 'reserve' day displayed in red on the arched indicator at 12 o'clock, alerting the wearer when winding is required. The day and date displays feature instantaneous jumping action at midnight.
On the Wrist & Price
On the wrist, the Calatrava 8-day presents a commanding yet refined presence and wears true to its size at 41 mm in diameter with the signature hobnail pattern adorning the caseband, it strikes an ideal balance between presence and comfort.
