Released in 2015, the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph ref. 5905P in platinum quickly became one of the hottest watches and a grail watch for many. Available in two dial variations —blue or black—this is a perfectly designed Patek featuring a solid platinum case —with a total weight of 130.3 grams to be precise— that even at 42 mm in diameter, it’s not too big nor too small. As far as its complications, the Patek Philippe ref. 5905P is equipped with an annual calendar and a 60-minute chronograph. Even though the annual calendar automatically takes into account the differing lengths of individual months it is still unable to factor in the differing length of the month of February or the leap years like a Perpetual Calendar would. Therefore, once a year, then, at the end of February, it requires manual correction. Other than that, this watch features two of our favorite complications here at WCL.
Things to Know About the Watch
Fitted with a gorgeous sunburst blue dial that behaves like a chameleon depending on the lighting conditions, this solid platinum watch with a total weight of 130.3 grams is a masterpiece of horology for the most discerning watch collectors.
The Dial
The dial of the Patek Philippe ref. 5905P features a convenient 60-minute chronograph at 6 o'clock —with day/night indicator— and annual calendar information displayed via three apertures between 10 and 2 o'clock. The blue dial is further accentuated by its white gold applied hour markers and white imprinted minute track and white fonts.
The Case
Its highly polished case with a concave bezel and concave caseband around the lugs is exquisitely finished like only Patek Philippe knows. An elegant timepiece that needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The chronograph pushers with a rounded rectangular shape are soft like butter and maintain the proportions and look of the most iconic Patek Philippe chronographs. If you know Patek, you can spot this watch a block away. While a 60-minute chronograph is much more convenient than a 30-minute one but still not as good as a 12-hour chrono —at least for us—, this watch is still perfect for those that like 60-minute chronos and that don’t need a 12-hour chronograph like that on the Patek Philippe ref. 5960.
And just as on all other platinum pieces from Patek, the cherry on top of the cake is the Top Wesselton diamond between the lugs at 6 o'clock as the tell-tale to quickly differentiate a platinum piece from an 18K white gold one.
The Strap
To complete the very elegant and understated look, the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph ref. 5905P is fitted with a gorgeous matte navy blue hand-stitched alligator strap with square scales and triangle-top pin buckle. The strap completes the elegant, yet somewhat sporty look of this incredible timepiece.
The Movement
The beating heart inside the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph ref. 5905P is the automatic calibre CH 28-520 QA 24H. This exquisitely finished movement is fully visible via the display case back and a real treat for the eyes. This exceptional movement is composed of 402 parts, 37 jewels and a gold oscillating weight. When fully wound, the movement provides a power reserve of 55 hours.
On the Wrist & Pricing
On the wrist, the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph ref. 5905P wears true to its size and perhaps just about a millimeter smaller when worn with short sleeves. The watch has unparalleled wrist presence that evokes all the Patek design cues that we admire as well as its unrivaled DNA. A chronograph with annual calendar that sits at the pinnacle of watchmaking. This is Patek Philippe in its full form and expression.
