The new Evolution 9 Collection embodies Grand Seiko's foundational design philosophy, harmoniously blending decades of classic craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics that capture the interplay of light and shadow—a quintessentially Japanese artistic expression. For Watches & Wonders 2025, the collection introduces the groundbreaking Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2, earning the designation "U.F.A."—Ultra Fine Accuracy. This revolutionary movement redefines precision in watchmaking, with accuracy measured on an annual rather than daily basis. The automatic U.F.A. movement achieves an unprecedented annual rate of ±20 seconds, establishing it as the most accurate mainspring-powered wristwatch movement available today.
The new Grand Seiko E9 Spring Drive U.F.A. SLGB003 features a dial design that draws inspiration from the ice forests of the Kirigamine Highlands near the Shinshu Watch Studio. Its intricately textured surface features a silver-tinged blue hue that evokes frost-covered trees in winter, complemented by an elegant tempered blue seconds hand.
The Grand Seiko E9 Spring Drive U.F.A SLGB003 is equipped with a High-Intensity Titanium—Grand Seiko’s proprietary metal alloy—case measuring 37 mm in diameter and fitted with a box-shaped sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating and a matching bracelet with a newly developed three-step micro-adjustment clasp that operates without a tool, allowing precise adjustments in 2 mm increments for enhanced comfort. The watch is very light with a total weight of only 100 grams and it offers a magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m.
The Movement
Thanks to the Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2 movement's compact engineering, these new timepiece features a modest 37 mm case diameter—the smallest among watches powered by the 9R series—making them ideal for those who prefer a more subtle wrist presence. The exceptional accuracy of the calibre 9RB2 stems from several technical innovations that include: enhanced manufacturing processes for the three-month-aged quartz oscillator, a newly designed integrated circuit, a temperature compensation programming based on measurements at various temperatures, a vacuum-sealed oscillator and sensor to minimize environmental interference, and a regulation switch that allows accuracy adjustments during servicing. The annual accuracy rate is measured at ±20 seconds.
Through the sapphire crystal case back, the beautifully finished movement reveals mirror-polished beveled edges and decorative elements inspired by Shinshu's natural landscape—from star-like jewels reminiscent of winter skies to frost-textured surfaces reflecting the local environment. The movement provides a 72-hour power reserve which can be tracked through the power reserve indicator on the back of the watch.
The Spring Drive Calibre 9RB2 movement is equipped with a skeletonized special oscillating weight with ‘Spring Drive Ultra Fine Accuracy’ written on it. In our opinion a little bit too much text to go on the oscillating weight of a luxury timepiece and something that cheapens the watch slightly.
On the Wrist & Price
The Grand Seiko E9 Spring Drive U.F.A. SLGB003 wears exceptionally well on the wrist. At 37 mm in diameter and 11.4 mm in thickness, it strikes that perfect balance between presence and comfort that many watch enthusiasts seek. The high-intensity titanium case provides a luxurious feel with noticeably less weight than steel alternatives, making it comfortable for all-day wear.
This material choice means the watch seems to disappear on your wrist during daily activities, yet remains pleasantly present when you glance down to check the time. The textured ice-forest dial catches light in subtle, constantly changing ways as you move your wrist. This dynamic quality makes the watch appear different throughout the day—sometimes exhibiting a pale, icy blue and other times revealing silvery highlights that dance across the surface.
