This weekend January 27-28, 2024 is the weekend for the legendary 24 Hours at Daytona Race now called The Rolex 24 at Daytona. Held annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, it is considered one of the most prestigious races worldwide. A thrilling endurance race, The Rolex 24 at Daytona is the second most important endurance race in the world after the 24 Hours of Le Mans —24 Heures du Mans— in France.
Held annually, this race tests the limits of both man and machine, covering a grueling 24 hours of non-stop racing action. The race features a unique format that demands skill, endurance, and teamwork. Each team is composed of a varying number of drivers —typically between two or three— who work together to navigate the grueling 24-hour race. The inclusion of multiple drivers per team adds an extra layer of complexity to the race, as it requires seamless driver changes, effective communication, and a shared understanding of the car's performance over the 24-hour duration of the event.
The inaugural race was held in 1962, and since then, it has become a hallmark event in the world of motorsports. The allure of the Rolex 24 at Daytona lies not only in its challenging duration but also in the caliber of drivers and teams it attracts. From seasoned professionals to up-and-coming talents, the race serves as a stage for showcasing skill, determination, and cutting-edge automotive technology.
The Daytona International Speedway's layout presents a unique set of challenges, with its high banks and demanding infield section. The combination of high speeds, close racing, and varying track conditions makes for an exhilarating and unpredictable competition. Apart from being an ultimate test of endurance for drivers and teams, the race also holds significance due to its partnership with Rolex. As the title sponsor, Rolex’s commitment to precision, performance, and innovation aligns seamlessly with the spirit of this event. The association further cements the race’s status as a pinnacle of motorsport. And of course, the winners at the 24 Hours of Daytona race receive a legendary Rolex Cosmograph Daytona along with a beautiful trophy.
Beyond the on-track action, the Rolex 24 at Daytona offers a vibrant and festive atmosphere, attracting enthusiasts from around the globe. Fans camp out, immersing themselves in the unique blend of excitement and camaraderie that only a 24-hour race can offer.
Over the years, the Rolex 24 at Daytona has etched its place in the annals of motorsport history, producing memorable moments and legendary performances. As it continues to evolve, the race serves as a testament to the endurance, skill, and passion that define motorsport. The Rolex 24 at Daytona stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence in motorsports, encapsulating the true meaning of endurance and performance. With its rich heritage, challenging track, and unwavering spirit, the race perpetually captivates fans and participants alike, making it an event like no other in the world of racing.
As it is customary, Rolex presents a two-tone —Oystersteel and yellow gold— Rolex Cosmograph Daytona to the winners and this is the actual watch right here from the 2017 race. The watch is not only accompanied by a very special box but also engraved on the case back with the Rolex 24 Daytona logo and the word 'Winner'.
The watch we have here was given to Nick Boulle who won first place in the Prototype Challenge Class along with his three teammates at the 55th Annual Rolex 24 at Daytona. Nick, also happens to be the son of Dennis Boulle owner of DeBoulle Diamond & Jewelry —an authorized dealer in Texas for brands like Patek Philippe, Rolex, Tudor, Girard-Perregaux, and others.
The Watch, The Box & Special Warranty Card
As you can see, the box is super nice and instead of having the traditional wavy pattern on the top of the lid, it features a checkered flag and a racetrack on the relief. Additionally, the interior of the box features a big Rolex logo in green, the watch is accompanied by a green suede service pouch, and its warranty card comes already filled with the information for the race —in this case 'Rolex 24 2017'— and dated after the date’s race.
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Oystersteel and 18K yellow gold with white dial feature a special engraving on its case back that only those who won this race will be able to enjoy for the rest of their lives.
Now, if you want to wear a Rolex just like this one, reference 126503 is available from Rolex for USD 19,500. Although the case back won't have this special engraving, this watch is still a timeless classic and one that looks great on any wrist.
