When the original Royal Oak first appeared in 1972, it was notable for several reasons and it was available only in stainless steel. However, in 1977 the first 18K yellow gold 39 mm Royal Oak was launched, bringing a whole new character to what would soon be regarded as an iconic design. In 2016, classic 18K yellow gold returned to Audemars Piguet’s product portfolio and was presented in a select group of Royal Oak models including the Royal Oak Chronograph ref. 26320BA at the SIHH 2016 as we reported here.
Today, to mark the 40th anniversary of the first precious metal Royal Oak and on the occasion of the SIHH 2017, Audemars Piguet is releasing two new Royal Oak Extra-Thin ref. 15202 versions in 18K yellow gold. Full hands-on review of the ref. 15202OR in 18K rose gold here and the stainless steel ref. 15202ST here.
The new 18K yellow gold “Jumbo” a.k.a Extra-Thin nowadays is available with two distinct 'Petite Tapisserie' dials: the classic blue as in the previous reference 15202OR with AP at six o'clock or in vintage-inspired champagne color under ref. 15202BA.OO.1240BA.02. One thing to point out, is that the blue dial version ref. 15202BA.OO.1240BA.01 features a lighter shade —similar to the yellow gold models released last year— compared to the hue on the 18K rose gold version. We will elaborate more on this, as soon as we see the watch in the metal next Monday at the SIHH 2017.
While the blue dial reference beautifully contrasts with the case and bracelet, the champagne dial version blends with the yellow gold creating a monochromatic aesthetic of beauty and warmth.
Both pieces still measure 39 mm in diameter like the original Audemars Piguet Royal Oak from 1972 and are still powered by the automatic calibre 2121 with 36 jewels, 247 parts and which provides a power reserve of 40 hours. The calibre still features the same partially skeletonized oscillating weight with the AP logo on it.
Sticker Price $55,400 USD — same price as the previous 18K rose gold reference. For more info on Audemars Piguet click here.
