A new Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT Chronograph inspired by the beautiful Shinshu sunrise reflecting off the Hotaka landscape with a color-changing dial depending on the lighting conditions. Available in a limited edition of 700 pieces, the new Spring Drive GMT Chronograph 9R 20th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGC275 commemorates 20 years of the Calibre 9R Spring Drive movement.
Its dial is one of the most unique color-changing dials with hues of red that go from crimson to burnt orange. The color of the dial takes its inspiration from the sun’s red light that illuminates the peaks of the Hotaka mountain range. Eventually, the light spreads to the surface of the mountains, turning the entire range a light crimson color, which gradually changes to the color of shinonome, or dawn. This beautiful moment, which can only be seen for about 30 minutes before and after sunrise, is expressed on the dial. A new technique called Optical Multilayer Coating makes this color-changing dial possible.
Things to Know About the Watch
The dial maintains its usual layout with a 12-hour chrono register between 4 and 5 o’clock, a 30-minute chrono register between 1 and 2, a date aperture at 3 o’clock, a running seconds register at 9, and a power reserve indicator at 7 o’clock.
The strong and angular 44.5 mm case has claw-like, hairline-finished lugs that stand out from the Zaratsu-polished elements. The case is made of Grand Seiko’s High-Intensity Titanium, which is approximately 30% lighter than stainless steel and brighter in color. Thanks to its curved lugs and low center of gravity, coupled with the reduced weight of titanium, the case ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. The concave, textured chronograph buttons ensure that the finger does not slip when activating the chronograph. This watch also features a GMT complication to allow the wearer to keep track of time in a second time zone. All markers, bezel numerals, and hands are coated with LumiBrite for optimal readability in low-light conditions.
The new Spring Drive GMT Chronograph Calibre 9R 20th Anniversary is equipped with a three-fold clasp with secure lock and push button release, solid and slide adjuster and is water resistant to 200 meters.
The Movement
Turning the watch over reveals the Calibre 9R96 powering this watch. This Spring Drive chronograph GMT delivers an accuracy of ±10 seconds per month and measures elapsed time up to 12 hours. The power reserve is 72 hours when fully wound and is shown on the indicator next to the 7 o’clock marker. The beauty of the movement’s finishing is visible through the display case back.
