Insider: Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance. A Stunning 25-Piece Limited Edition.

Armin Strom celebrates the 15th anniversary of their fully integrated Manufacture by reimagining their most historically-important innovation in a slim 39 mm white gold case. The new Dual Time Resonance GMT showcases the brand’s resilient approach to harnessing the Resonance phenomenon as their longstanding commitment to extraordinary hand-finishing; culminating in a dial side kinetic spectacle that’s unlike anything else in contemporary watchmaking.

The resonance phenomenon is generated by housing two movements in a single case in such a way that the balance wheels of both movements naturally influence and regulate each other by sharing vibrations. As these balance wheels oscillate in anti-phase, they gradually become synchronized mirror images of each other —and ultimately regulate each other’s motion via the phenomenon of resonance. Watchmaking’s long fascination with resonance, which began in the year 1655, was based on the early recognition that it could eventually be leveraged to achieve both chronometric consistency and timekeeping precision.

Things to Know About the Watch

The inspiration for the Armin Strom Gravity Equal Force comes from a pocket watch that contained a motor barrel design instead of a standard going barrel. By designing a barrel operating in the reverse order of a traditional mainspring barrel, and by driving the going train via the barrel arbor and winding the barrel housing, the functionality is improved and the wear reduced.

Functionally, the Dual Time Resonance GMT displays two independent time zones, with indications of hours and minutes for each; while also supporting time zones that deviate from GMT by fractions of an hour. Day/Night indicators provide relevant AM/PM context for each time zone.

The Dual Time Resonance GMT First Edition includes two compelling strap options and is offered with a ten year warranty and is limited to 25 pieces. The watch is very slim and comfortable to wear with fantastic wrist presence. The sky-blue grenage dials with black azurage chapter rings and applied polished baton indexes, rhodium-plated day/night discs are extremely beautiful and very appealing.

The Movement

Turning the watch over reveals the beating heart of the Dual Time GMT REsonance is the new 231-part in-house manual calibre Armin Strom ARF22 with double hour, double minute, and double day/night indications. The movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours thanks to two independent barrels. The plate and bridges are decorated at the highest quality level and there are two independent regulation systems that stabilize each other connected by a resonance clutch spring.

The Resonance Clutch Spring is the key to Armin Strom’s mastery of resonance first presented in 2016 and the result of three-years of intensive research and development. Armin Strom’s Co-Founder and technical director Claude Greisler explains:

“Developing a perpetual calendar or tourbillon would have been far easier than the years we spent calculating and validating the Resonance Clutch Springs, it was uncharted territory.”

On the Wrist & Pricing

A feat of horology in its true essence and an incredible masterpiece that shows the horological prowess of this relatively young independent watchmaking brand. Available in a limited edition of only 25 pieces and delivered with two straps: a matte-gray alligator strap with sky-blue stitching and a light-gray alligator strap with pearl-gray stitching.
