Watches & Wonders 2020: Presenting the Cartier Santos-Dumont XL
We thought we knew all there was to know about this watch created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, Alberto Santos- Dumont, which allowed the aviator to read the time in flight. The first modern men’s wristwatch, it made its mark with a pure design incorporating a square bezel with visible screws. We knew, too, of the watch’s symbolic strength —an accessory designed to go ever higher, always further. Nothing would have predicted what it had in store for us. Because in the power of its original design infinite possibilities are revealed; because its timeless shape never ceases to inspire Cartier for new interpretations.

The Maillon de Cartier watch is firstly a jewel designed by the Cartier watchmaking studios. A precious watch that resides in the creative watchmaking repertoire of the Maison. A bracelet whose chain-links are offset and aligned on the bias by Cartier.
Watches & Wonders 2020: Cartier Santos-Dumont Engraved Limited Editions
The new Engraved Cartier Santos-Dumont Limited Edition watches pay homage to Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont one of the pioneers of aviation. “Go further” could have been Santos-Dumont’s motto, which pushed him to invent delicate, poetic flying machines for his pleasure and that of Parisian spectators —machines that connected dreams and technology, man and sky. This is the story told by the new Santos-Dumont watches.

Following the success of the Santos de Cartier Skeleton released last year, the French maison released a new iteration of this watch at the SIHH 2019. The unmistakable design of the Santos de Cartier with its square case and exposed screws gets even better in the new Santos Skeleton Noctambule with its ADLC steel case —measuring almost 40 mm wide— and skeletonized bridges with superluminova, that at the slightest dimming of the ambient lights glows like a powerful greenish lantern.
SIHH 2019: Santos de Cartier Large with Blue Dial. Live Pictures & Pricing.
The Santos de Cartier collection received a major facelift last year and this year at the SIHH 2019, the focus was on the release of a new Santos Chronograph, a couple of new Skeletonized references —one of them with superluminova on its bridges—, the new Santos Dumont lineup and the new Santos large model with blue dial we have here. Named after Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont whom Cartier made a watch for, the Santos de Cartier features a square case with curved edges and exposed screws that are unmistakable design cues of this legendary watch. SIHH 2019: Panthère de Cartier Figurative Black Lacquer. Live Pictures & Pricing.
As much of a bracelet as it is a watch, the new Panthère de Cartier Figurative is one of the most unique timepieces presented by Cartier at the SIHH 2019. An 18K yellow gold bangle that opens up by twisting one of its sides with the iconic panthère on one end and a quartz watch on the opposite end, the new Panthère de Cartier Figurative is an absolute objet d’art —art object. Feminine, tasteful and exuberant are some of the words that come to mind when perusing this new timepiece in the form of a piece of jewellery.
SIHH 2019: Cartier Baignoire Allongée Celadon & Cartier Tank Chinoise Red. Live Pictures & Pricing.
Amongst many novelties released by Cartier this year at the SIHH 2019, the new Cartier Libre collection stands out because of its lineage and strong DNA. While five pieces were recently presented, there are two watches that we absolutely loved because of their strong art deco look and because they exude Cartier all the way. First let’s talk about the Baignoire Allongée Celadon. Named ‘baignoire’ —word in French for bathtub— because of the similarity between its oval case profile resembling a bathtub, this new watch is endowed with an 18K white gold case measuring 47 mm in length by 21 mm in width and 8 mm thick. Its case in an ode to the jewelry mastery of Cartier is studded with diamonds, emeralds and Paraiba tourmalines.
Pre-SIHH 2019: Cartier Libre Collection. A Technicolor Vision Revealing Cartier's Wealth of Inspiration.
In preparation for the SIHH 2019 Cartier has just announced the Cartier Libre collection. In this latest edition, creativity shifts lines and meets a technicolor vision with the Tank Chinoise Red, the Diagonale watch and the Baignoire Allongée watches. Year after year, this union between watchmaking and creativity shifts lines, revisits established conventions and reveals Cartier’s wealth of inspiration in terms of form. By highlighting or putting certain aspects into perspective, the color exposes previously imperceptible facets. These four new watches revisit some of the oldest watches ever released by Cartier in the 20s bringing to the table three exceptional timepieces in white gold and one in yellow gold.
Pre-SIHH 2019: Cartier Privé Collection. Two New Watches in Platinum or Pink Gold.
Pre-SIHH 2019 —which is less than two months away—, Cartier has just unveiled a brand new collection with a tonneau-shaped watch. With its shape both strong and pure, the dial is on the cusp between a rectangle and an oval just as the case curves slightly, tendering one of the first significant modifications aimed at fitting it better to the wrist. This year, Cartier celebrates this legendary watch shape with a redesigned hours and minutes model and a skeleton dual time zone model, taking watch aesthetics to another level.
Insider: Cartier Tank Cintrée Platinum. The Resurrection of a Classic in a 100-Piece Limited Edition.
Originally launched in 1921 as one of the many iterations of the Cartier Tank, the new Tank Cintrée in platinum was released this year taking a prominent position within the SIHH 2018 new releases from Cartier. With its elegant curvature, elongated rectangular case with the unmistakable DNA of the iconic Tank watch, the Tank Cintrée is a watch whose curved design hugs the wrist. While the Tank Cintrée is a forerunner to the Tank Américaine, this is a watch that kind of fell throught the cracks until it was revived by Cartier at the end of 2017 with the release of two fully skeletonized models to celebrate the 100 years of the Tank.

Opposed to its siblings that are not skeletonized, the Santos de Cartier Skeleton is only available in the large size with a case measuring almost 40 mm wide —39.8 mm x 47.5 mm actual size.

One of the most elegant watches in the market at the moment is the new Cartier Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat in 18K yellow gold and its stainless steel counterpart. A watch designed to be worn on every occasion and as classic and timeless to go with a pair of jeans or with a suit and a tie, the new Drive the Cartier is now available in an extra-flat manual wound version in 18K yellow gold, after the success of its 18K pink gold sibling released a year ago.
SIHH 2018: New Santos de Cartier Large and Medium Size. Fitted with New Case Sizes, SmartLink and QuickSwitch Systems.
One of the most iconic and popular Cartier watches from the 80s just got even better. Named after Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont whom Cartier made a watch for, the Cartier Santos with its rounded angles of the dial, the seamless curve of the horns, and the exposed screws made for an iconic watch that would inspire countless reinterpretations. The new Santos de Cartier is now available in two different sizes, the first one, a medium size measuring 35.1 mm x 41.9 mm and the second one, a large model with a case measuring almost 40 mm wide —39.8 mm x 47.5 mm actual size.
SIHH 2018: Rotonde de Cartier Skeleton Mysterious Double Tourbillon. Live Pictures & Pricing.
There is something very special about Cartier's Mysterious Hours watches and at the SIHH 2018 we were blown away by the new Rotonde de Cartier Skeleton Mysterious Double Tourbillon with the tourbillon appearing to be suspended in mid-air with no connection to the rest of the movement —a clever optical illusion created by Cartier. This new watch cased in a 45 mm platinum case with all of its components hand-finished —including the movement bridges being chamfered, flanks drawn and screw heads polished— is simply gorgeous and one of our favorite watches at the SIHH this year.
