Two months ahead of the SIHH 2018 —Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie—, Cartier presented the new Rotonde de Cartier Mysterious Day & Night Watch. Today, we were finally able to check the watch out in person. The new Rotonde de Cartier watch lends its generous dial to two historic Cartier complications: the mysterious movement and a Day/Night indicator. These two complications are part of Cartier’s watchmaking heritage both dating from 1912. On one hand, the mysterious movement was created for the Model A mystery clock, while the day/night movement was part of the Comet clock a.k.a the Planet clock. Available in 18K white gold or 18K pink gold, both models are equally stunning but we prefer the white gold one as it i more discreet.
This SIHH 2018, Cartier now brings these two complications together for the very first time in watchmaking. The sun, driven from left to right by the mysterious movement, appears to levitate in the top half of the dial, before handing over to the moon.
The sun and moon, two stylized heavenly bodies, in turn indicate the hours of the day and night when the retrograde minutes are displayed in the bottom half of the dial.
This airborne reading of the time is magnified by the juxtaposition of the radiating guilloché and satin-brushed sunray finish on the dial.
The Movement
Turning the watch around reveals the exquisitely decorated calibre with day/night indication on the back side as well. Cased in a 40 mm 18K pink gold case and delivered on a grey alligator strap with 18K pink gold folding clasp, the watch is powered by the manual wound in-house calibre 9982 MC composed of 174 parts and 26 jewels and which provides a power reserve of 48 hours when fully wound.
