Here's the fifth of the seven new watches launched by A. Lange & Söhne at the SIHH 2016 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève. The latest model of the Saxonia family stands out with its lucid design and the compelling combination of two popular complications with a precise moon-phase display and the characteristic Lange oversized date. The new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Moon Phase with its 40 mm case is available in 18K rose gold ref. 384.032 or 18K white gold ref. 384.026. The solid silver silvered dial features a prominent date indication at 12 o'clock and a gorgeous moon phase display with Glashütte's celestial vault at 6 o'clock. The famous over-sized double digit date aperture is a style-defining facet of A. Lange & Söhne watches. The gold-framed split double aperture as well as the space saving configuration with two separate display segments for the units and tens evolved to become an iconic brand hallmark.
The A. Lange & Söhne was first showcased in 1994, today, the new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Moon Phase from SIHH 2016, features one of the most beautiful cases and moon phase displays out there. The moon phase display in the top half of the subsidiary seconds dial at six o’clock constitutes the visual counterbalance that this dial needed.
The moon phase display is connected to the hour-wheel continuum so, just like the moon itself, it is always in motion. It reproduces the period from new moon to new moon with an accuracy of 99.998 per cent, thanks to a precisely calculated seven-stage transmission. Once set, and assuming that the watch runs continuously, the display only has to be corrected by one day every 122.6 years. The intense blue tone of the solid-gold lunar disc is created by a special patented coating process. Then, a laser is used to cut out no fewer than 852 stars.
The automatic movement powering the new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Moon Phase is the in-house Lange calibre L086.5. The movement composed of 325 parts and 40 jewels, features an ample 72-hour power reserve that is achieved with only one mainspring barrel. A large central rotor in 22K gold and with a centrifugal mass —on its outer edge— in platinum efficiently delivers the winding power while the balance beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph. With a classic screw balance, a free-sprung Lange balance spring, a three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver and a hand-engraved balance cock in a perfectly hand-finished movement, the Saxonia Moon Phase unites all of the quality features that connoisseurs around the world associate with the A. Lange & Söhne timepieces.
On the wrist, the new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Moon Phase wears true to its size and perhaps more like a 41 mm watch. With remarkable elegance and understated presence, the moon phase indicator rises in all glory, especially when wearing a blue shirt/blue jacket combo. The white gold model is delivered on a hand-stitched black alligator strap with matching pin buckle, while the rose gold one comes on a brown strap.
