Insider: Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X. An 8-Piece Limited Edition.

The latest creation to emerge from Roger Dubuis and their partnership with Lamborghini is the new Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X. While its name suggests that the watch takes its inspiration from the legendary Countach, it doesn’t. The reason why this new Excalibur is named Countach is that the watch is in Bianco Siderale —sideral white— which is the same color that Ferruccio Lamborghini specified for his own Countach.

Lamborghini, the supercar manufacturer from Italy, and Roger Dubuis from Geneva, have teamed up for several years now and the result are watches with unique calibres built like engines. The collaboration is also the genesis of unique projects where the client sits with the manufacturer to create his or her very own watch.

In homage to the strong partnership between the two companies, the distinctive geometry of the Periscopio roof and NACA air intakes of the supercar are found and scaled to size within this striking timepiece. The red and black interior pattern of the Countach is also found on the inside of the watch engravings, parts of the glass, and its inner strap too.

Things to Know About the Watch

The new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X is finished in pearlescent Bianco Siderale in an MCF —mineral composite fiber— case measuring 47 mm in diameter and the watch is limited to just eight pieces. The bezel is also in MCF and the crown is in titanium with a highly contrasting red lacquer ring. The dial is in titanium with a satin-brushed finish, the lower flange features transferred texts and minute track, shot-blasted and NAC coated upper flange with screw-like hour markers and sapphires like rear lights around the tourbillons located at 4 and 8 o’clock respectively.

As a side note, MCF —mineral composite fiber—is 2.5 times lighter than ceramic and 13 percent lighter than SMC carbon. The overall feel of the watch is extremely light but still not featherlight like a Richard Mille timepiece.

The watch is delivered on a white skeleton 3D rubber strap with an ultra-ergonomic design that includes red and black fabric mesh inserted between the rubber layers and a triple folding clasp in black DLC titanium with titanium blades. Both the strap and clasp feature an interchangeable quick-release system like pretty much all Richemont watch brands —one of the benefits of being part of such a huge watch brand conglomerate where technology gets shared between companies. The strap was designed in such way to maximize breathability and movement.

The Movement

Powered by a calibre fully developed and manufactured in-house, built to perform with the same efficiency as the supercar’s engine, the Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X boasts a truly impressive mechanical flying double tourbillon movement. This 40-jewel manual wound movement is fully visible via the display case back. Both tourbillons are tilted at an exact 90-degree angle to each other to compensate for the effects of gravity not only horizontally but also vertically. In addition, the use of lightweight materials to create the tourbillon cages ensures an impressive 60 hours of power reserve. In the spirit of offering ultimate precision to its wearer, the movement bears the Poinçon de Genève.

On the Wrist & Price

On the wrist, the Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X wears true to its size and is quite light on the wrist. An exceptional watch that looks just like the supercar it takes its inspiration from. Sporty, summery, and very good-looking are some of the words that come to mind after reviewing this formidable timepiece.
