For all Super Mario fans the long wait is finally over, RJ-Romain Jerome is now releasing the Super Mario Bros. collection. In honor of the game’s 30th anniversary, RJ is adding the center piece to its Generational Icons collection. In a 46mm case RJ has recreated the essence of the original Super Mario Bros. game from 1985. Nintendo’s legendary character Mario is exceptionally dressed in his recognizable red shirt and blue overalls with his famous jump and iconic mushroom. These most symbolic elements of the game are depicted on the dial and are all captured in the visual style that captivated a generation. The Super Mario Bros. timepiece is limited to 85 pieces to echo 1985, the year the game launched.
The new collaboration between RJ-Romain Jerome and Nintendo is a tribute to this genre-defining video game of the 8-bit era, the first of its kind. This collection, which allowed the Swiss Maison to express its unlimited creativity by mixing traditional know-how with playfulness, is also a true expression of avant-garde watchmaking.
As part of the Games collection the Super Mario Bros. timepiece is presented in the brand’s distinctive Moon Invader case, now in titanium grade 5 with a black PVD-coating. The lugs are fitted with safety screws and integrated ball-and-socket joints, in Teflon coating, for optimal wrist adjustment. And on the integrated case back, the Super Mario Bros. medallion cohabits with the grainy-textured stellar-patterned. At the time, the video game was graphically advanced as it was difficult to obtain such a detailed representation of the Super Mario Bros. character; and today it was equally challenging to reproduce the blurred effect of the pixels. In order to accentuate the pixelation with perfect geometrical forms, the dial was built on a complex three layered plate with different finishes, either bead-blasted or drawn out for both the RJ monogram and the ground setting, which offers an overall 3D effect. Stemming from craftsmanship, each applique, representing the hero and the setting, was hand-painted in cold enamel and then delicately set on the dial to add even more perspective to the ensemble.
