Not long ago we reviewed and photographed one of Richard Mille's latest creations, the RM052-01. The Richard Mille RM052-01 takes its inspiration from a previous model, the RM052. Opposed to its predecessor, the RM052-01 features a TZP ceramic bezel and case back with a middle case of carbon nano-tubes —measuring 42.70mm in width, 50mm in length and 15.95mm in thickness— and a solid red gold skull on the dial that includes a tourbillon strategically located inside its jaws.
This watch featuring the newest material in the Richard Mille line-up has the most fascinating finish that we've ever seen on any other ceramic composite watch due to its unique grain —product of the 95% yttrium-stabilized zirconium used in its production. The vertical satin-brushed finish on the case is a real treat to the eyes. Following the traditional tripartite case construction with five-point star screws and the over-sized crown with rubber ring, the Richard Mille RM052-01 stays true to the brand's values and essence.
The red gold skull appears suspended at the center of the dial as it is held by four bridges —resembling the bones on a skull and bones— that have been meticulously sculpted and finished with the utmost care and perfection. The beveling on the edges of the skull and the manual-wound tourbillon calibre located inside its jaws is beyond beautiful. The placement of the tourbillon and overall design of this timepiece breaks with all the norms of what tourbillon watches typically look like. The jewel of the tourbillon is placed between the upper and lower jaw for an even more striking and impressive look. Every opening on the front of the skull allows for a partial view of the RM052 calibre inside —the calibre provides a power reserve of 48 hours when fully wound. The watch is of course fitted with a display case back with anti-reflective treatment on both sides that allows for full view of the back of the skull where jewels and winding wheels can be fully appreciated. The amount of work from a design perspective and from a horological standpoint is almost unfathomable.
The flange around the perimeter of the case is perfectly finished with white dot markers with luminescent material and a minute track that provides the perfect contrast against the blackness of the watch. Additionally, on the inside of the case —at the 45 minute marker— there's an RM052 engraving. The engraving can be fully appreciated by tilting the watch at the right angle.
Fitted with a black rubber strap with double-folding clasp, this watch wears very comfortably thanks to its 'tonneau' shaped case. The rubber strap is just like the one on the new RM055 Bubba Watson with rectangular openings along the area where the strap meets the case.
The watch wears extremely comfortable, very light and a little high on the wrist. The wrist presence is out of this world and we guarantee that if you see one in the flesh, you'll fall in love with it as much as we did. Now, remember time is of essence because only 30 pieces of this watch are available.
