Following timepieces adorned with charoite, specular hematite, and even meteorite, the brand first introduced the mesmerizing pale yellow tones of Baltic amber in a one-of-a-kind Double Tourbillon model in June of 2024. Now, yet once again the timeless beauty of millennia-old fossilization comes in the new Arnold & Son HM Steel Amber in a 38-piece limited edition.
Arnold & Son embarks on a new journey in material exploration. Sourcing this rare fossil was no easy feat—months of meticulous searching were required to secure the perfect specimen for the exclusive production. Thus the brand selected a block of amber with a total weight of 1.6 kilograms—approx 3.5 pounds—fossilized for over 30 million years. This rare material carries an inherent risk—its true quality remains unknown until it is worked. Not every piece is suitable for crafting a dial.
Amber captivates through the warm, fiery hues of autumn conifers. The luminous translucency of resin. Baltic amber encapsulates the richness of life, the complexity of nature, and the enchantment of time’s passage. This rare and intricate fossilized resin takes center stage on the HM Steel Amber, gracing its minimalist dial within an ultra-thin stainless steel case measuring 39.5 mm in diameter.
To ensure the highest standards, cylinders were carefully extracted, cut, and inspected individually. Imperfect bases and fragile sections were discarded, preserving only the most solid and visually striking specimens. Amber’s unique visual appeal lies in its distinct streak patterns—no two pieces are identical. Its rich hues harmonize beautifully with an ‘imperial green’ alligator leather strap, creating a refined interplay of color.
The dial of the HM Steel Amber is designed for pure visual impact. With no complications, it remains uninterrupted, drilled only at the center for the hour and minute hands. The HM collection holds a unique place in the Arnold & Son portfolio, reserved for exceptional creations.
To complement the depth and richness of the dial, Arnold & Son selected one of its most emblematic movements to power this watch. The A&S1001 calibre, like all movements crafted by the brand, is entirely developed, manufactured, decorated, assembled, and adjusted in-house at its La Chaux-de-Fonds workshop.
This ultra-thin calibre boasts a streamlined architecture, measuring just 2.7 mm in thickness, enabling the case to maintain an elegant profile at only 7.82 mm. Operating at a frequency of 3 Hz, it delivers an impressive power reserve of 90 hours.
The artistry extends to the case back, where the A&S1001 calibre is fully decorated. Radiating Côtes de Genève stripes emanate from the balance staff—the heart of the movement—while the meticulously polished and beveled edges contrast beautifully against the circular-grained mainplate beneath, showcasing Arnold & Son’s mastery of fine finishing.
