After so many inquiries and direct messages via Instagram I felt the need to write an editorial on the new M.A.D.1 RED Edition. First of all, I consider myself very fortunate that after many emails that I sent out to MB&F back when the M.A.D.1 Friends Edition came out last year, I was added to the list of interested people and this gave me access to be one of the first ones to be able to purchase the just released M.A.D.1 RED Edition. I am also very lucky that I was in Geneva for Watches & Wonders 2022 a couple of weeks ago and I was able to collect my piece in person at the M.A.D. Gallery. What an incredible experience to say the least.
While the M.A.D.1 is not an MB&F Machine, but a more accessible timepiece that was created under a different brand, the idea was still generated by Max Büsser himself and the watch in the metal is simply stunning. Now that I am the proud owner of this watch, all I can say is that I am super happy to have it on my wrist as I type this editorial.
On March 22 the M.A.D.1 RED Edition was launched and a lottery was opened to give an equal opportunity to everyone to get one. More than 25,000 people registered for the lottery and if am not mistaken today a random draw was going to be executed by a computer. Hopefully when you are reading this, you happen to be one of the lucky ones. Now if you were not, looks like a new M.A.D.1 edition will be released next year so stay tuned.
The M.A.D.1 RED is cased in a 42 mm highly polished stainless steel case with its unconventional time indication —time is read at 6 o’clock via a sapphire crystal opening—, a battle axe-shaped oscillating weight —with luminescent material— that takes the center stage at the top of the watch. This edition is slightly different to the Friends Edition with a narrower bezel and a new type of crown. Personally, I prefer this edition and the red on it is pure fire.
This time a black ring indicates the hours and a red ring the minutes with the use of a pointer at 6 o’clock. The numerals are filled with super bright luminescent material that allows for impressive time telling in complete darkness.
The watch is delivered with a black textile perforated driving strap with red contrast stitching that is secured by a deployant clasp. On the wrist, the watch is really cool and an absolute conversation piece. Glad I have this one that will never leave my collection.
Good luck to those waiting on the lottery results to be able to purchase one!
