After holding the official title of chronometer maker to the French Royal Navy, Abraham-Louis Breguet tirelessly conceived and developed impressive timepieces that would leave an indelible imprint on watchmaking history. In the wake of this unique heritage and driven by the same constant determination to excel, Breguet unveiled the Marine Équation Marchante —Marine Running Equation ref. 5887— we featured here. This year, Breguet continues to redesign this line through three new creations, that are available in white and rose gold, and in titanium as a first for the brand. The first two of these new watches are the Marine Chronograph ref. 5527 and the Marine ref. 5517 —time and date.
About the Breguet Marine Chrono ref. 5527
Endowed with the graphic codes of the new generation of Marine models presented last year, the new Breguet Marine Chronograph ref. 5527 is available in white and rose gold and in titanium. Sporting an 18K white gold case measuring 42.3 mm in diameter and a blue hand-guilloché dial, this new watch features a 12-hour chronograph with three subdials —running seconds at 9 o'clock, 30-minute register at 3 and 12-hour register at 6 o'clock.
Additionally, a date aperture is located between 4 and 5 o’clock to set the final touch to this very sporty new Breguet. The background on the calendar disc is in the same shade of blue as the dial to offer a seamless look. Very stylized applied Roman numerals with white superluminova complete the stunning look of the dial.
The blue dial in gold, features and engine-turned wave-motif pattern that echoes the marine collection’s origins. A variation in rose gold is also available with a silvered gold dial and in titanium with a sunburst slate grey dial also in gold.
The watches are sold in a choice of either leather or rubber strap with deployant clasp with Breguet logo. The rubber strap is very supple and of a very high quality rubber composite.
The new Breguet Marine Chronograph ref. 5527 is water resistant to 100 meters and is fitted with a display case back that allows for full view of the 28-jewel automatic movement calibre 582QA which provides a power reserve of 48 hours while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph. The oscillating weight was completely redesigned resembling the look of the bottom half of a ship's wheel —rudder.
On the wrist, the new Breguet Marine Chronograph ref. 5527 wears true to its size and impeccably. The look of the watch is somewhat similar to the Ulysse Nardin Marine line and extremely well finished. At the end of the day this is Breguet and no corners have been cut. The dial is in the same shade of blue as the Marine Running Equation ref. 5887.
Sticker Price $33,800 USD for 18K white or rose gold and $22,600 USD for titanium.
About the Breguet Marine Self-Winding ref. 5517
With brand new bracelet lugs, reworked fluting, and a crown surrounded by a wave decor and adorned with a wider "B", the new Breguet Marine ref. 5517 sports for the very first time a titanium case. The titanium version features a sunburst slate grey dial, while the white gold and rose gold models both bear an engine-tuned “wave” motif dial —blue for the first and silvered for the latter.
Equipped with an 18K white gold case measuring 40 mm in diameter, the Marine ref. 5517 appears and wears much smaller than its Chronograph counterpart, despite the small difference —2.3 mm smaller— in case size.
Sporting a blue dial with Roman numerals, the center of the dial features the same wave guilloché pattern as the Chronograph ref. 5527. Just like the Marine Chronograph, the Marine Self-Winding ref. 5517 just like the two other new watches from the Marine collection is also available in three different metals with different dial combinations.
The maritime spirit of this self-winding model continues on the back with the new oscillating weight design to resemble a ship’s wheel —rudder. Just like on the new Breguet Marine Chronograph, the watch is sold either with a blue rubber strap or a leather strap. The strap is equipped with deployant clasp with Breguet logo. The Marine Self-Winding ref. 5517 is powered by the 26-jewel automatic movement calibre 777A which provides a power reserve of 55 hours while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph.
On the wrist, the new Breguet Marine Self-Winding ref. 5517 wears relatively smaller than its actual size but quite nicely. While the dial is stunning in person, the case size and the price tag are two major downers for us. Regardless, another great looking Breguet that won't make you feel as old as your grandfather.
