The new Patek Philippe Quadruple Complication, ref. 5308G-001 is an automatic minute-repeater with a split-second chronograph and instantaneous perpetual calendar that makes its debut in Patek Philippe's regular collection with an elegant white gold version for Watches & Wonders 2025. This watch is the successor to reference 5208P the watch typically worn by Mr. Thierry Stern, President of Patek Philippe. In reality, this should not be labeled a quadruple complication as it includes three complications in theory, but Patek Philippe accounts for the Split Second function as a second complication to the chronograph.
This new reference 5308 represents the evolution of the Triple Complication Reference 5208 launched in 2011, which featured a minute repeater, a mono-pusher regular chronograph, and an instantaneous perpetual calendar. The addition of an energy-intensive split-second mechanism presented significant engineering challenges, now masterfully overcome in the new R CHR 27 PS QI caliber.
The 18K white gold case on the Patek Philippe Quadruple Complication ref. 5308G-001 is entirely polished measuring 42 mm in diameter and 17.71 mm in thickness. Despite that this is a split-second chronograph, the case is fitted with only two pushers as a mono-pusher split-second Chronograph marvel. The slider for the minute repeater takes the left side caseband.
The case is fitted which is extremely thick considering that the new Vacheron Constantin Solaria packs 41 complications in a case that is only 14.99 mm thick.
The ice blue dial features dark blue transfers and dark blue applied markers, perpetual calendar indication apertures—day of the week, date, and month—between 10 and 2 o'clock, chronograph registers at 9 and 3 o'clock respectively, a 12-hour chrono register with a small day/night indication, a 60-minute chrono register with leap year indication aperture, and a running seconds subdial with moon phase indicator at 6 o'clock.
The Movement
Turning the watch over reveals the Patek Philippe automatic calibre R CHR 27 PS QI powering the watch. For this new movement, two patents have been filed as it incorporates two groundbreaking innovations:
An anti-backlash wheel that eliminates chronograph friction at the clutch.
An isolation system that prevents energy consumption by the split-second mechanism when stopped.
The automatic calibre R CHR 27 PS QI composed of 799 components, boasts enhanced barrel torque and a platinum mini-rotor that increases winding efficiency and provides a power reserve between 38 and 48 hours when fully wound.
The watch features an instantaneous perpetual calendar—a remarkable technical achievement reserved for only the most exceptional timepieces. It ensures the day, date, and month disks transition simultaneously in just 30 milliseconds through their elegantly arranged apertures. True to Patek Philippe's heritage of excellence in acoustic complications, the minute-repeater strikes on two classic gongs, delivering the legendary sound quality that has distinguished the manufacturer's chiming watches throughout its history.
