Girard-Perregaux is a brand that has always been in the forefront evolving their watch designs and finding ways to improve their collections. The Girard-Perregaux Laureato has had some sort of a comeback in the last five years and the Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock is a perfect example of that. While respecting the legacy of the iconic Laureato from 1975, Girard-Perregaux has employed technology to create the Laureato Absolute line and come up with a very light but strong Carbon Glass case.
This high-tech material combines layers of carbon fiber and fiberglass which is subjected to high temperatures and pressure to form a homogenous material. Thereafter, the material is milled into the desired shape. The resultant case exhibits a matte, slightly textured finish. Interestingly, the constituent layers create uneven strata within the material and are randomly aligned, making the appearance of each case unique and every watch exclusive.
Things to Know About the Watch
Measuring 44m in diameter, this new chronograph is housed in a case formed of Carbon Glass as we explained before. A material that is light as a feather but solid as a rock. The Laureato Absolute models are an evolution of the classical Laureato. The dial features a sandwich-type construction, masterfully playing with depths and, in so doing, creating a fascinating and highly legible display. The sandwich dial is comprised of an upper layer, perforated with numerous openings, sitting upon a lower layer. The apertures in the upper layer afford partial sight of the lower layer. The upper layer is executed in gradient grey —more like a smoked fumé type of dial—, while the lower layer is presented in grey, delivering an attractive contrast, and making some dial details, such as the baton-type indexes, appear recessed.
This design approach cleverly plays with depths, enriching the overall appearance of the dial. The chronograph is endowed with three snailed registers that sit below the upper dial layer, while a minute track is presented on a flange encircling the dial, thereby aiding readability. The date aperture between 4 and 5 o’clock is very discreet with a calendar disc matching the color of the dial.
In order to optimize wearer comfort, the Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock is presented on a dark grey rubber strap featuring a fabric effect motif and incorporating coordinating grey stitching. The surfaces of the case and strap facets flow seamlessly into each other, appearing as though they are just one component. The black tones of the case sit in concert with the grey hues of the bezel. The strap is made from a specific type of rubber that delivers superior flexibility and strength when compared with traditional rubber. The folding black titanium buckle is equipped with a micro-adjustment system that allows the wearer to have an optimal wrist fit.
The Movement
The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Crystal Rock is powered by the in-house automatic Calibre GP03300- 1058. The movement is protected by a solid case back with the Laureato Absolute engraving on it. Equipped with a screw-down crown, the watch is water-resistant to 50 meters.
