The new Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite is not your average multiple travel time type of watch. Not only this new watch from the German manufacture sports the brand new calibre 89-02 but it also gives you 37 time zones taking into consideration quarter hour, half hour and three quarter hour time zones variances. This new timepiece —following the launch of the Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon in 2012— consolidates the ability of this Saxon manufacture at crafting spectacular timepieces from an horological feat standpoint as well as from a functional perspective. Fitted with a very nicely finished generous case with satin brushed and polished areas measuring 44 mm in diameter and a thickness of 14 mm, the beating heart inside this timepiece is a new in-house developed calibre. The new automatic calibre 89-02 with a power reserve of 72 hours powering this amazing timepiece, was fully conceived and developed in-house. Fitted with a silvered-grain dial this watch allows world travelers to keep two different time zones in check indicated by the airport IATA codes for each of the 37 cities via the apertures located at 8 o'clock.
The apertures at 8 o'clock not only indicate the selected time zone, but they also keep track of the DST —Daylight Savings Time— or STD —Standard Time— is active at the destination time zone. While the destination time is marked by the hour and minute hand on the central pinion, the home time is displayed in the subdial at 12 o'clock also featuring a power reserve indicator and a day/night indicator that will show a black dot for night and no dot for daytime. With running seconds at 6 and a big panorama date at 4 o'clock, the layout of the dial is rounded out by the contrasting day/night indicator at 9 o'clock.
Equipped with three crowns conveniently located on both sides of the case band, setting the home time and the destination time on this watch is not a complicated operation. All it takes is to turn the crown at 4 o'clock clockwise or counter clockwise to set the destination time via the IATA codes on the apertures at 8 o'clock. After setting the destination, the date is also set to the correct date at the selected city taking into consideration adjustments as you fly back from the West Hemisphere.
Available in 18K white gold or 18K red gold, the watch is equipped with an elegant alligator strap with deployant buckle. The watch is fitted with a display case back that allows for full view of this new calibre and both crystals on the watch are treated with anti-reflective coating to provide the best legibility in any lighting condition. The movement is nicely decorated and a real treat for the eyes. The calibre is composed of more than 400 components, 63 jewels and off-centered micro rotor and it beats a frequency of 28,800 vph —4 Hz— to provide its 3-day power reserve.
On the wrist, the new Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite wears true to its size and with very strong wrist presence following all the cues and strong DNA from Saxonian watchmaking. After working on this hands-on review at Baselworld 2015, all we can say is that this watch is impressive and definitely on the money.
