Straight from the SIHH 2016 in Geneva, we are bringing you our hands-on with what we think is one of the most beautiful historical inspired Panerais ever released along with the new Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days PAM 663. The new Radiomir 1940 3 Days PAM 662 is a faithful recreation of the Egiziano Piccolo updated to meet the current standards of high quality sports watchmaking. Originally no more than 30 or 40 examples of the Egiziano Piccolo were produced, making it one of the most sought-after vintage Panerai watches. The distinctive, original element of the model is the brown dial, its color inspired by that of the vintage watches which have undergone the discoloring and tropicalization effect caused by the radium luminous material. Fitted with a 47 mm case, this watch is simply perfect.
Among the clients of Panerai who asked for a Radiomir watch, after the Luminor patent application, was the Egyptian Navy, which for the first time in 1954 turned to the Florentine watchmaker for the supply of a special series of diver’s watches designed for frogmen. It was this request which gave rise to one of the most fascinating watches in the history of Officine Panerai, known to collectors by the reference 6154 and the name “Egiziano Piccolo” — small size to distinguish it from its famous successor, the Egiziano of 1956. This new execution of the "Egiziano piccolo" the Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days PAM 662 is even fitted with a plexiglas crystal to look even more vintage. Its sandwich dial is flawlessly executed with a gorgeous color and with the Radiomir Panerai branding engraved on it like on the PAM 372.
The watch, in good historical Panerai fashion comes with the reference between the lugs at 6 o'clock.
Just like its sibling the PAM 663, the watch is powered by the manual wound Panerai in-house calibre P.3000 with a power reserve 3 days with two barrels and composed of 164 components.
This new Officine Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days PAM 662 is equipped with the gorgeous calf Ponte Vecchio dark brown strap with beige contrast stitching measuring 26/22. The strap comes with the trapezoidal polished steel buckle measuring 22 mm. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters. The strap shows the OP logo on both the 12 and 6 o'clock sides.
On the wrist, this is without a doubt our favorite historical Panerai ever. Watch wears slightly smaller than its actual 47 mm size.
