SIHH 2016: Presenting the new Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Spiral. Hands-on Live Pictures & Pricing.

A recipient of the 'Horological Revelation Prize' at the 15th Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève —GPHG— and with a name that gets confused quite often with the Laurent Perrier champagne,  Laurent Ferrier is one of those independent brands that holds a special aura with its clean simple designs where the craftsmanship makes the difference. Laurent Ferrier was one of the nine brands that were invited this year to the new 'Carré des Horlogers', to show their novelties for the very first time at the 2016 SIHH Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève. One of the novelties we liked the most from Laurent Ferrier was the new Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Spiral or Double Balance-Spring Tourbillon.

This new watch, is fitted with a mirror polished pebble-shaped case that is perfectly square —measuring 41.5 mm x 41.5 mm— and with Laurent Ferrier's signature ball-shaped ratcheted crown. The watch is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters.

The new Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Balance-Spring Tourbillon comes in two different models featuring either a gorgeous delicately finished 'Grand Feu' white enamel dial or a black onyx dial— with railway minute track, Roman numerals, 'assegai-shaped' hands and a small recessed subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. The watch presented in a black or taupe alligator leather with alcantara lining features an 18K white gold pin buckle or double folding clasp.

At Baselworld 2015, Laurent Ferrier unveiled the Galet Square for the first time equipped with a micro-rotor with a natural escapement and it was immediately awarded with the Horological Revelation Prize at the GPHG 2015. Today, on the occasion of the SIHH 2016, Laurent Ferrier unveils this new model that is a perfect fusion between his two iconic creations. The new Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Spiral —double balance-spring tourbillon— is equipped with a tourbillon device conceived by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801, complemented by two head-to-tail mounted balance-springs in the center of the balance. The main advantage of this construction developed by Laurent Ferrier lies in maintaining the center of the balance firmly on its axis, while compensating for the effects of gravity. This approach guarantees the extreme reliability of the regulating system.

The beating heart inside the new Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Spiral is the manual wound in-house LF 619.01 calibre inspired by 19th century chronometry models and composed of 188 parts and 23 jewels. This calibre, features a manual-winding system with a long-blade-type ratchet pawl system distinguished by the delicate mechanical clicking sound emitted during winding. The movement is finished with extreme care, as evidenced by the manual decoration on the tourbillon carriage bridge. The bridges are adorned with a 'Côtes de Genève' motif, the mainplate is circular-grained, the sharp edges and interior angles are chamfered and hand-polished, and the screw heads are also mirror polished. The movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph to provide a power reserve of 80 hours when fully wound.

On the wrist, the watch wears true to its size and with exceptional wrist presence. Elegant, bold and minimalist are some of the words that come to mind when putting the new new Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Square Tourbillon Double Spiral on the wrist.
