Introducing: Speake-Marin Openworked Dual Time Terracotta

Introducing the new Speake-Marin Openworked Dual Time Terracotta timepiece. The signature feature of the Openworked collection is the open-worked dial, which reveals the main components of the manufacture movement. The impressive display reveals the excellence of the micro-mechanics, set in a unique and striking architecture, adorned with ever-changing details and finishes. The large apertures and skeletonized bridges on the barrel and micro-rotor create a three-dimensional, multi-layered structure, further enhanced by the small seconds counter at 1 o’clock. Each model in the Openworked collection offers, at a glance, a fascinating insight into the movement that Speake Marin has developed with originality and expertise.

The eye-catching display is framed by the iconic Piccadilly case. Inspired by the first marine chronometers and developed in 2002 as a homage to the brand’s British origins, it was revamped in 2017 by renowned designer Eric Giroud, who emphasized the sinuous lines and imbued it with a more contemporary look. All models in the Openworked collection are available in two sizes, with either a 38 mm or 42 mm case.

The new Speake-Marin Openworked Dual Time Terracotta is inspired by the idea of travelling to the most evocative places on the planet, where the horizon is dominated by unspoilt landscapes and rare lands. Like The Grand Canyon in Arizona, the Atacama Desert in Chile, Wadi Rum in Jordan, but especially the Luberon in France, where the rays of the setting sun turn the picturesque terracotta-paved villages and the beaten paths through the ochre quarries of Provençal Colorado a deep red hue and even the terracotta tennis courts.

With its unique and warm colour, the new Openworked Dual Time Terracotta interprets a simple yet sophisticated easy-chic style, suitable for both formal and informal urban occasions. A bold creation inspired by the beauty of the world's most evocative landscapes.

Featuring an open-worked dial, the watch reveals intricate micro-mechanics framed by the iconic Piccadilly case. Crafted from grade 5 titanium —either in 38 mm or 42 mm— with a thickness of 12.35 mm, the Piccadilly case of the new Openworked Dual Time Terracotta is extremely light and comfortable and it combines elegance and comfort.

With its unique terracotta hue and sophisticated design, this watch embodies a spirit of adventure and refinement Its modern design has become an icon for Speake Marin: its round shape is defined by a domed bezel that extends beyond the flat, horizontally brushed middle case and is also recessed about the case back. The crown, flared and grooved for easy gripping, is adorned with the logo, while the geometric lugs reveal the screws securing the rubber strap, which is fastened by a pin buckle.

Water-resistant to 30 meters, the Piccadilly’s case is protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal on the dial and case back, through which the exceptional mechanism can be admired.

The display of the new Openworked Dual Time Terracotta is based on a complex architecture. It is built on several levels and is characterized by the utmost care for all its surfaces. The open-worked main dial and the small seconds counter are decorated with a frosted hand finish that allows special lighting effects and is given a terracotta color with a hint of orange thanks to a positive PVD coating. The dial is surmounted by the large three-dimensional bridges of the barrel and oscillating weight: unlike the previous edition, they are rhodium-plated while retaining the traditional micro-blasted finish and mirror-polished bevels.

On the upper level, the home time display is two-tone to emphasize the day/night function. The upper half is blackened with a décalque, while the Arabic numerals are highlighted with matt grey Super-LumiNova, which emits an orange glow in low-light conditions. The same applies to the lower half and the second time zone hand, while the entire disc is finished with cerclage.

The minute flange and the semi-arc with the retrograde date display are accentuated by a black PVD treatment: the former has a circular finish with grey lacquer indices and the 5-minute markers filled with grey Super-LumiNova emits a blue light in the dark; the latter, micro-blasted and angled, bears the numerals transferred in matt grey lacquer. Light grey Super-LumiNova, which glows blue, is also applied to the central hour and minute hands. As always, their shape evokes the Big Bang, honoring the brand’s British origins.

Turning the watch over reveals the automatic movement calibre SMA02 with a second time-zone and retrograde date functions, designed and manufactured in-house by Le Cercle des Horologers in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Featuring a micro-rotor perfectly integrated within the components, it beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph and has a single barrel ensuring a 52-hour power reserve.

The movement, comprising 273 parts, features an exceptional level of decoration on the case back side, the components are entirely rhodium-plated in black; the large bridges are decorated with 1.5 mm Geneva stripes and angles; the balance-wheel bridge is rhodium-plated and micro-blasted with polished bevelled profiles. Against this dark background, the terracotta-orange positive PVD treatment of the micro-rotor’s signature topping tool and the engravings that personalise the calibre itself stand out. All the steel components are polished, the gear wheels are decorated with cerclage, and the screw heads with the chamfered cut are mirror-polished. The exquisite finishing typical of haute horlogerie, the outcome of refined techniques and long-standing know-how, enhances the original and innovative structure of the mechanism.
