Pre-SIHH 2019: Armin Strom Masterpiece 1 Dual Time Resonance Sapphire. The First Sapphire Case for the Brand.

Just released back in October 2018, the Masterpiece 1 Dual Time Resonance by Armin Strom is a horological Masterpiece and the first watch in a new collection. Combining the practicality of two completely independent time indications with the increased precision of two independent movements in resonance, the Dual Time Resonance now is released with a sapphire crystal case which is a first for the brand. In a distinctive oval case, two independent movements sit side-by-side, their regulators wedded by Armin Strom’s patented Resonance Clutch Spring performing a continually horological two-step between the dual eye-catching counter-oscillating balances.

The two independent movements display two independent time zones —not simply one movement with two displays. The new SIHH 2019 Armin Strom Dual Time Resonance Sapphire launches in a limited edition of 8 pieces with a scratch-resistant full sapphire crystal oval case measuring 59 mm x 43.4 mm. Fitted with two blue hand-guilloché dials, the Dual Time Resonance Sapphire displays two time zones brilliantly. Additionally, the independent second time display can also function as a countdown indicator or for tracking elapsed time. Two independent —aside from resonance— movements, two independent time displays, one 24-hour indicator, four mainspring barrels, and two conical power reserve indicators. The watch is delivered on a blue alligator strap with stainless steel double folding clasp.

While Armin Strom is known for not covering their movements with a dial to highlight the horology within, this sapphire crystal case takes transparency to a whole new dimension. “This new Sapphire case sets the perfect stage for the detailed work and passion we put into the Dual Time Resonance. The total transparency does not allow for any mistakes and demands a finish on the highest level, which goes in line with our philosophy,” says Claude Greisler, co-founder of the manufacture.

Sapphire crystal rates 9.0 on the Mohs scale, as opposed to 9.5 for moissanite and 10 for diamond. Diamond-coated tools spend days cutting, then milling the case components from massive sapphire crystal blocks. These are then left for a few days to allow any tension generated by the heat of machining to be evenly distributed throughout the crystal. The case is then polished for days, transforming the opaque milled crystal into one that is crystal clear. Only $100K USD more than its predecessor, we can’t wait to see this new watch at the SIHH 2019 next week. Live pictures to follow.
