News: Presenting the Panerai Submersible Goldtech PAM 974. A New Gold Alloy for the Brand.
Back in 2017, Panerai released the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Oro Rosso PAM 684 which was the first Panerai Submersible with a 42 mm case in red gold and a water resistance to a depth of 100 meters. Today, two years later, Panerai presents the Submersible Goldtech PAM 974 also in 42 mm but with a case made out of Goldtech. This new gold alloy, unlike standard gold, is made with a percentage of copper and platinum that imbues the material with a rich and intense red hue, one that is both strikingly modern and uniquely timeless.
Fitted with a black ceramic rotating bezel and a black dial like its predecessor the PAM 684, the biggest difference between the two —other than the different movement and gold alloy— is that the latter features the word ‘Submersible’ and depth rating inscriptions on the dial in gold. Something that adds a nice touch of contrast to the watch.
A confluence of style, sophistication, and strength, this radiant timepiece is the paradigm of modern luxury. Because of the addition of platinum to this gold alloy, the case is prevented from oxidizing, extending the lifetime of the watch.
Now, another thing that differentiates this watch against the PAM 684 is that the new Panerai Submersible Goldtech PAM 974 is powered by the automatic OP Calibre XXXIV rather than by the in-house calibre P.9010. Not sure why Panerai decided to go in this direction. The watch is equipped with a display case back and delivered on a black alligator strap with black stitching.
