Eye Candy: The Art of Painting with Jaquet Droz Ateliers d'Art Petite Heure Minute Tiger

When it comes to watch brands, Jaquet Droz is very well known for the artistic timepieces they make. In the 18th century, the watch masters in the Jaquet-Droz family were pioneers in the art of luxury decoration, generating work for an entire generation of craftsmen. The Ateliers d'Art collection from the brand highlights different horological art techniques including painting, enameling, paillonné enameling, intaglio printing, bas-relief engraving, and sculpting, amongst other watch art techniques.

The art of painting on the Jaquet Droz combines two incredible watchmaking techniques. Featuring an ivory 'Grand Feu' enamel dial with a miniature painting of the face of a tiger, this dial takes no less than a week to complete. The 'Petite Heure Minute' subdial with white Roman numerals at 12 o'clock provides the perfect balance on this exceptionally elegant timepiece.

Hand-painted with the aid of a microscope, the skillful artist uses an extremely fine brush to complete its creation. With no two pieces alike, each of the 28 pieces in this limited edition is a one-of-a-kind creation. Each brush stroke is carefully executed to create the most realistic depiction —in this case of a tiger— of the animal on the dial. While we’ve seen birds, rodents, panda bears, dragons, dogs, pigs and other felines, this tiger is one of our favorite pieces. With its green haunting eyes, one can feel the power and ferocity of the tiger in the wild.

Equipped with a 43 mm 18K red gold case, the watch is powered by the automatic Jaquet Droz calibre 2653.P with a power reserve of 68 hours. Available in a limited edition of 28 pieces the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d'Art Petite Heure Minute Tiger is delivered on a rolled-edge handmade brown alligator strap.
