Insider: Glashütte Original Senator Diary. A Fascinating Mechanical Timepiece with Alarm Mechanism.
There are several mechanical timepieces fitted with an alarm mechanism and some iconic historical alarm watches, nevertheless, the Glashütte Original Senator Diary is a fascinating watch unlike any other. Fitted with a robust and very solid 42mm case available in 18K rose gold, 18K white gold or stainless steel, the Senator Diary is perhaps the best alarm complication out there as it allows for you to set the alarm also on an specific date as an appointment reminder. The beautifully designed on this watch case features polished and satin-brushed finished areas that are a treat for the eyes.
The Glashütte Original Senator Diary ref. 100-13-01-01-04 in 18K rose gold features a very sophisticated mechanical alarm mechanism that can be used as a friendly appointment reminder or just as a wake up call on your wrist. This watch features a gorgeous silver galvanized dial with rose gold hands and applied markers with superluminova, a panorama date indicator at 3, an alarm hour indicator at 6 and an alarm date indicator at 9 o'clock. Inside the indicator at 9 o'clock, you will also find a small aperture near the number 27 where the on/off and the date/hour modes are displayed.
In order to set the alarm, all that the wearer needs to do is press the pusher located on the case band at 8 o'clock to rotate the disc inside the alarm indicator to switch between four different modes: 'd' to set the date for the alarm, 'h' to set the time at which the alarm needs to go off and the alarm on and off modes. After the correct mode has been selected with the pusher, then the wearer needs to rotate the crown at 10 o'clock in counterclockwise position. The hour for the alarm can be set in quarter-hour intervals only. Once the desired date and time for the alarm have been set, then the pusher needs to be pressed one more time to indicate the alarm bell in the on position. To fully wind the alarm mechanism, the crown at 10 o'clock needs to be rotated clockwise until some resistance is felt. Once the alarm goes off, a small hammer in the movement will strike the gong for a duration of 80 seconds unless the alarm is stopped by pushing the pusher at 8 o'clock. It is worth mentioning that the ring tone of the alarm is extremely nice and not annoying at all.
In order to set the date on the Senator Diary, Glashütte Original fitted the watch with a pusher at 2 o'clock that needs to be pressed in order to advance the date wheel. The pusher is fitted with guards at the top and bottom in order to avoid accidental operation of the date mechanism while wearing the watch. The time is set via the crown located at 4 o'clock and the watch is also fitted with a small corrector on the case band at 9 o'clock to reset the seconds hand for a precise time adjustment.
The Senator Diary is fitted with a black alligator strap that is fitted with internal end links to guarantee a perfectly flushed look against the end lugs of the case. The strap is fitted with a very sturdy deployant double folding clasp with the Glashütte Original logo that is easy to use and nicely done.
Fitted with a display case back, the automatic Glashütte Original calibre 100-13 can be fully appreciated. The movement provides a power reserve of 55 hours while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph and is very nicely decorated as it is the norm with this manufacture from Saxony.
On the wrist, the watch wears true to its size and very comfortably. Just imagine yourself next time you are sitting in that board of directors meeting and this beautiful timepiece starts ringing just to remind you of your next appointment that day. Don't you think that would be just fascinating?
