Baselworld 2018: Hublot Big Bang MP-11 3D Carbon & Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Sapphire. Hands-on with the 200-Piece Limited Edition 16-Day Power Reserve Timepiece.

Continuing with our coverage of all the novelties from Baselworld 2018, we now bring you two incredible watches from Hublot, the alchemist of high tech materials. The new Hublot Big Bang MP-11 in 3D carbon ref. 911.QD.0123.RX and Big Bang MP-11 Sapphire ref. 911.JX.0102.RW are available in a limited edition of 200 pieces each and are equipped with 7 series-coupled barrels providing 16 days of power reserve. Cased in a 45 mm case in either 3D carbon or sapphire crystal, the 3D carbon model is a first for the brand and for the watch industry. The 3D case is composed of a polymer matrix with three-dimensional carbon fibers making the case ultra-light and highly resistant to impacts and scratches.

Things to Know About the Watch

The new Big Bang MP-11 offers a spectacular view of the 7 series-coupled barrels and the in-line power reserve indicator. The multi-cylindrical construction, which has been positioned on a horizontal axis, guarantees autonomy for an astounding two weeks. The hour and minute subdial at 12 o'clock is driven by a vertical gear train, which posed an additional challenge for the designers. The force of the barrels is tilted on a perpendicular plane by a transmission system very rarely employed in watchmaking: a 90-degree helical worm gear. As another unique feature of this innovative calibre, the balance wheel is on the dial side to create symmetry with the helical gear at 2 o'clock.

Hublot Big Bang MP-11 3D Carbon

This “All Black” Big Bang MP-11 is very light with a total weight of only 90 grams including the strap. The three-dimensional structure of the carbon creates unique facets and reflections. This version, with smoked composite sides, allows the black PVD-treated mechanism to be admired with its polymer matrix composite case.

Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Sapphire

The absolute transparency of the new Big Bang MP-11, limited to 200 pieces, is juxtaposed with its chromatic backside, shaped from transparent sapphire crystal. The leader in large scale machining of sapphire, the hardest and most resistant material after diamond, Hublot is taking the crystalline case to new heights by endowing it with curves that follow the contour of the movement’s cylinders. As remarkable as the engine it contains the sapphire crystal case bulges to create a loupe effect over the power reserve indicator. It is a true display of engineering prowess as sapphire crystal is extremely challenging to machine.Absolute clarity or hypnotic blackness, each the Big Bang MP-11 reveals exceptional engineering.

The Movement

Visible via the display case back is the new Hublot in-house movement calibre HUB9011. This manual wound skeletonized movement is composed of 270 parts, 39 jewels and 7 series-coupled barrels with power reserve display roll. When fully wound, the movement provides an outstanding power reserve of 16 days while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph.

On the Wrist & Pricing

On the wrist, the new Hublot Big Bang MP-11 3D Carbon and Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Sapphire wear true to their size and with incredible wrist presence. In addition to its 16-day power reserve, the fact that the sapphire crystal protecting the dial had to also be specially designed with such curvature, makes this watch even more of a feat of horology. Without a doubt, one of the best releases at Baselworld 2018.

Sticker Price $105,000 USD for Sapphire and $82,000 USD for 3D Carbon. For more info on Hublot click here.
