Experience: Frédéric Malle Musc Ravageur 20-Year Limited Edition. Memorable like a Royal Oak QP.
A while back we brought you a feature on Frédéric Malle, one of our favorite perfumiers, and today we bring you Frédéric Malle’s latest release. An underrated name in the world of fragrances that was introduced in 2000 as Editions de Parfums, it was presented as a completely new concept whereby the world’s greatest noses composed exclusive fragrances to be sold under their names.
Founded by the grandson of the founder of Christian Dior Parfums, Frédéric Malle himself started his career in 1988 at the prestigious perfume laboratory Roure Bertrand Dupont. To mark the brand’s twentieth anniversary, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle celebrates their thirty-two perfumes created so far —by looking back to the year of their creation— by including their names and year of release in a special edition bottle and box for only six of their most iconic fragrances.
For the past 20 years, the perfumers chosen by Frédéric Malle, push their limits and transcend their creativity creating a deliciously eclectic collection boasting a fantastically rich range of propositions.
This 20-year limited edition release includes Carnal Flower, Portrait of a Lady and Vetiver Extraordinaire by Dominique Ropion, French Lover by Pierre Bourdon, L’Eau d’Hiver by Jean-Claude Ellena, and Musc Ravageur by Maurice Roucel. These six of the most popular perfumes are presented in their 100 ml bottles elegantly clad in a frieze that tells the story of twenty years of total creative freedom.
Musc Ravageur enhances the magnetic aspect of musk with amber, vanilla, patchouli, and sandalwood, at the total exclusion of floral notes. Having caused a scandal when the perfume first appeared in 2000 due to its name —Pest Musk in French—, Musc Ravageur is now celebrated in all its sensuousness as the Sistine Chapel of the Amber Oriental tradition. An unapologetically sexy perfume created by Maurice Roucel who is also the creator of Dans tes Bras —in your arms in French.
Maurice Roucel joined Chanel’s laboratory as a chemist in 1973, and since then has been a self-taught perfumer. Although his legendary olfactory style is now characterized for the most part by opulent sensuality —sprung from his preference for musk, white flowers, and amber— the precise methodology of his original profession has remained. Roucel's strong personality allows him to bypass trends, as was the case in 2000 with Musc Ravageur which is a synonym of savage sex appeal when it comes to the olfactory sense.
An amazing fragrance that is extremely unique, very bold, and quite memorable, just exactly like when you run into an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in the wild that is hard to forget.
