Insider: CVSTOS Challenge Sealiner Chronograph 5N Red Gold. A Teak Wood Dial and Marine Vibes.
CVSTOS was launched in 2005 founded by Sassoun Sirmakes —the son of Vartan Sirmakes, President of Franck Muller Watchland Group— and by Antonio Terranova, a trained micro-technical specialist with a passion for watch design. Together, they have created unique looking watches with exquisite craftsmanship for almost 20 years now and today is hard to believe that this unique watch brand was launched when Sassoun was only 21 years old. CVSTOS designs are always exploring unchartered territory like the dial of this Challenge Sealiner Chronograph with a teak wood base plate that evokes the decks of yachts.
The CVSTOS Challenge Sealiner Chronograph is available in different metals including stainless steel, 5N navy blue steel, 5N sky blue steel, 5N red gold, and also in clear sapphire crystal.
Things to Know About the Watch
The tounneau-shapped case of the CVSTOS Challenge Sealiner Chronograph ref. C01107.4125001 in 5N Red Gold measures 53.7 mm x 41 mm and combines a solid case in 5N red gold with titanium grade 5 elements including the pushers, case inserts, screwdown crown with rubber insert —matching the color of the strap—, the case back with sapphire crystal, the clasp, strap screws, and the bezel screws.
The teak dial on this watch has a distinctive and elegant appearance that is inspired by the teak wood used in boat decking, these dials typically feature a textured, striped pattern that mimics the look of the wood. The base of the dial is composed of a varnished teak wood plate with rhodium-goldened decorative applied markers and rings around the chronograph subdial. The dial features a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock —with 15-minute race countdown—, a running seconds indicator shaped as a boat propeller, and a linear day/date aperture at 3 o’clock. The turquoise, navy blue and red accents on the dial create a fantastic contrast.
The applied markers, the skeletonized hour and minute hands and even the small hands for the chronograph are all coated with bright SuperLumiNova.
The construction of the watch case is very complex featuring titanium inserts with CVSTOS medallion, portholes with oval sapphire crystal openings on the left case band —allow for partial view of the movement— and chronograph pushers shaped as boat cleats —metal parts were ropes are tied— to give the watch a very marine look. The watch is delivered on a turquoise rubber strap matching the color of the seconds indicator, accents on the dial and the rubber insert on the screwdown crown.
The Movement
Turning the Challenge Sealiner Chronograph over reveals a titanium case back with sapphire crystal that allows for full view of the automatic CVSTOS calibre CVS857. This movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours while beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph. The movement is equipped with a three spoke fully skeletonized oscillating weight in Tungsten.
