Experience: Auer Amandes Princesses. The World's Best Chocolate-Covered Almonds from Genève.

If you are a regular traveler to Genève, Switzerland, you already know that a trip to Geneva is never complete unless you’ve stopped at Auer Chocolatier near the Place du Molard. Auer Chocolatier was founded in 1939 and is located on Rue de Rive 4. This five-generation family-owned chocolate maker is best known for their legendary Amandes Princesses’ —princess almonds— that we can only describe as the world’s best chocolate-covered almonds.

Located close to the shopping area on Rue du Marche and the Lac Léman lakefront in the center of Geneva, Auer is a small and very inconspicuous storefront. Stopping by Auer and grabbing several boxes of these chocolate-covered almonds —not cheap by the way— is a must if you are in Geneva, especially during Watches & Wonders. It is as ‘Genevois’ as popping into The Leopard Room at the base of the Hotel d’Angleterre for a cigar or a drink on any given night. Also known as the epicenter for watch collector gatherings during Geneva Watch Days or Watches & Wonders, The Leopard Room is one of those bars that has a je ne sais quoi, that makes it so vibrant and unforgettable, just like its macarons.

But what makes these almonds so special? Well, besides the quality of the milk chocolate used for its covering and the quality of their almonds, there is a very thin layer between the chocolate and the almonds that tastes like honey or hardened sugar giving these delicious almonds an incredible texture in every bite.

The Amandes Princesses’ were created in 1964 by Claude Auer and since then, the recipe has not changed. Packaged in a very unique orange box with brown accents, the box has not changed since 1998 and let us tell you that these boxes can be recognized a mile away just like the burgundy-red shopping bag that comes with them.

Priced at CHF 130 per kilo —2.2 pounds in a kilo—, the smallest box available is the 100-gram box that sells for CHF 17 —yes they charge you CHF 4 for the box alone— and there are about about 10 almonds in it. But how can you not get the iconic box to protect these almonds that are as coveted as pure gold?

The Auer Amandes Princesses chocolate-covered almonds are a delectable treat enjoyed by many around the world. The combination of this rich, smooth chocolate coating a crunchy almond provides a satisfying contrast of flavors and textures. These almonds offer a delightful indulgence for those with a sweet tooth and even for those who are not into sweets.

The sweetness of the chocolate complements the nuttiness of the almond, creating a harmonious blend that appeals to a wide range of palates. A classic souvenir that never fails to please and that is worth every Swiss Franc you pay for them. Next time you are in Geneva, don’t you dare forgetting to grab a few boxes of them.
