Insider: Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Skeleton Platinum. One of the Nicest Skeletonized Watches Out There.

Another one of our favorite watches this year at Watches & Wonders 2024 is the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Skeleton Platinum ref. PFC912-2020003-200182-EN. This new watch is the epitome of pure skeletonization with its minimalistic design and an ALD —Atomic layer deposition— Milano blue movement. The dial or ‘lack thereof’ is beautifully skeletonized with a vertical satin-brushed finish along what’s left of the main plate. Applied 18K gold rhodium-plated indexes mark the hours along with its skeletonized delta hands.

The artisans at Parmigiani Fleurier have expertly played the solid spaces off the opened elements to bring light into the very heart of the PF 777 calibre. This delicate latticework, meticulously hand-beveled, draws the purist's eye to the beating center of the mechanism, allowing it to apprehend some of the mysteries of its kinematics.

Equipped with a case in platinum with a platinum bracelet, the proportions of the watch are just perfect with a diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of 8.5 mm —slightly thicker than its Tonda PF Micro-Rotor counterparts at 7.8 mm. Every aesthetic and chromatic choice is meticulously considered. The captivating interplay between the luminous platinum and the ALD Milano Blue surfaces of the skeletonized movement, intricately treated with satin and sandblasted finishes, creates a striking contrast. The sharp angles, painstakingly hand-polished, further enhance the visual appeal.

The interplay of light and shadow is enhanced by the extension around the dial, improving the watch's elegance and readability. Every part is meticulously designed for a classy and sophisticated look, creating a pleasing sight.

This new Tonda PF Skeleton in platinum is a true chameleon when it comes to its appearance, showcasing its versatility based on varying lighting conditions. The interplay of light is fundamental in shaping our perception of the dial's colors; factors such as the brightness, angle, and warmth of the light source all contribute to the overall look of the watch. Natural sunlight, for example, can intensify the hues present, bringing out their depth and vividness, thus presenting the colors in their most authentic and vibrant form.

The Movement

The automatic movement powering this watch is the in-house calibre PF777 equipped with a platinum oscillating weight. This 187-part movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph —4Hz— and provides a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement is a treat for the eyes and is fully visible via the display case back.

On the Wrist & Price

On the wrist, the watch wears true to its size and with immaculate wrist presence thanks to its very slender profile. The Tonda PF Skeleton wears remarkably well on the wrist, thanks to its 40 mm case size which provides a perfect balance between presence and wearability. The slim profile of the watch at just 8.5 mm in height allows it to slip effortlessly under shirt cuffs while feeling substantial enough to be noticed.

While its platinum composition —with a total weight of 218 grams— is higher in density and heavier than gold, the watch still wears quite comfortably for all-day wear, making it an ideal companion for both formal occasions and everyday use. The sleek integrated bracelet design further enhances the overall comfort and usability of the timepiece, ensuring that it stays securely in place while exuding a sophisticated and modern aesthetic.
